What is art therapy and how does it help us?
Art therapy uses creative techniques to help people express themselves. This type of therapy can help anyone at any age explore their emotions. It’s used to help improve self-esteem, manage addictions, relieve stress, improve symptoms of anxiety and depression, and healthily cope with an illness or disability.
You definitely don’t need any artistic ability. Just like when you journal your thoughts, creating art can reveal things from your unconscious mind.
CREATIVE EXERCISE: Visualizing & Drawing your Emotions
In this exercise, I want you to assign colors, shapes, textures, etc. to your emotions.
Close your eyes and sit with yourself for a moment. What are you feeling? What emotions are you carrying at the moment? If that emotion were a physical object, what color would it be? What shape? Does it have a texture?
After assigning all these qualitites to the emotion you are feeling, draw it out. Use the colors, shapes, and textures and create a piece with it.
You can use any type of media; collage, painting, graphic design, drawing, etc.
